Sobieskiego 100, Residential complex in Mokotów, Poland
Sobieskiego 100 is a residential complex in Mokotów consisting of two concrete tower blocks connected by an aerial pedestrian bridge. The structure houses approximately 100 apartments across 11 floors and originally included on-site amenities such as a kindergarten, telephone exchange, basketball court, and movie theater.
Built in 1978 under an agreement between the Soviet Union and the Polish People's Republic, the complex served as accommodation for Soviet diplomats until the mid-1990s. The building then transitioned to different uses as political circumstances changed.
The complex became known locally as 'Spyville' because of the Soviet diplomats who lived there, and this nickname reflects how the building was perceived by the surrounding community. Stories about its mysterious past still resonate with people who remember those decades.
The complex is located along Sobieskiego Street and is easily visible from the street, but public access is restricted as it remains a protected monument. Visitors can see the structure and its distinctive bridge from outside, but cannot enter the grounds.
After the Soviet Union collapsed, the building stood largely vacant and deteriorated for years until Warsaw authorities took possession in 2022 to repurpose it for Ukrainian communities. This transformation marked a significant turning point for a place that had been sealed off from public life for decades.
