Sé de Portalegre
Sé de Portalegre, Cathedral and National Monument in Portalegre, Portugal.
The Sé de Portalegre is a cathedral built in Mannerist style with a distinctive facade and spacious interior. Inside, the main altar and side chapels display around ninety paintings, along with ornamental tile work and carved wooden details.
Construction began in 1556 under architect Afonso Álvares, establishing an important religious center for the Alentejo region. The sacristy and cloister were completed later in the 18th century, showing how the building continued to grow and change through different periods.
This place serves as the spiritual heart of Portalegre, where religious art and craftsmanship from different periods remain on display. The interior spaces continue to host worship and prayer, showing how people have used this location for centuries.
The cathedral is open to visitors daily, and it is important to dress respectfully as this is an active place of worship. Parking is available nearby, and the location is easily reached on foot from the town center.
The building holds a notable collection of 17th-century tile panels carefully set into the interior spaces. These ceramic details are often overlooked by visitors, but they represent a craft tradition that was typical of Portuguese churches from that era.
