Bologa Castle

Bologa is a stone castle situated on an elevated position overlooking the surrounding valley. The structure features circular towers, thick defensive walls, and multiple levels designed originally for protection and surveillance.

The castle was founded in the 13th century when Transylvania was under contested rule. In the 17th century, it received reinforced fortifications to defend against growing Ottoman threats to the region.

The castle displays building styles from different periods, visible in how successive generations modified its walls and rooms. These layers show how people adapted the space to their needs across centuries.

Visitors can explore the site year-round, with guided tours available through the local cultural heritage office upon request. It is advisable to wear sturdy footwear, as the ground is uneven and some stairs are quite steep.

Beneath the castle runs a network of tunnels connecting different areas of the site. Some of these passages were carved directly into the bedrock and likely served as escape routes or supply passages.
