Academy Park, Protected green space in Stari Grad, Serbia.
Academy Park is a protected green space in Stari Grad featuring stone ornamental fences with classical and neo-baroque design elements along with decorative vases throughout its borders. The park is divided into connected sections by paths and furnished with benches for sitting and rest.
The area transformed from an Ottoman cemetery into the Great Market around 1824, then became a park in 1889 under urbanist Emilijan Josimovic's design vision. This conversion was part of Belgrade's modernization efforts during the late 1800s.
The park serves as a gathering space where students and visitors naturally congregate between the University of Belgrade and nearby institutions. Its position among educational buildings makes it a social hub for the academic community and anyone passing through the neighborhood.
The park is open year-round with paths that connect different sections, making it easy to walk through and explore the entire space. Benches are distributed throughout, so visitors can find a comfortable spot to rest whenever needed.
Excavations in 1968 uncovered the remains of Roman bathing facilities from the 3rd century, including a cold bath chamber, a dry heat room, and a hot bath room. These ancient structures lie beneath the northern section of the park today.
