Banovo Brdo, Residential district in Belgrade, Serbia
Banovo Brdo is a residential neighborhood in the southern part of Belgrade, Serbia, built across a hillside with a mix of apartment blocks, smaller houses, and tree-lined streets. The main roads run downhill and connect the area to the city center.
The neighborhood takes its name from Matija Ban, a diplomat from Dubrovnik who built his summer residence on the hill in the mid-19th century. The earlier name Golo Brdo, meaning bare hill, gradually gave way as a settlement grew around his property.
Cinema Šumadija is one of the few active neighborhood cinemas in Belgrade that still draws a regular local audience. Film screenings and small community events take place there throughout the year, making it a natural meeting point for residents.
The neighborhood sits on a hill, so the terrain changes noticeably depending on which street you take, which can be tiring on foot. Shops and restaurants are concentrated along the main roads and are easy to find.
The Faculty of Forestry on the hill contains an arboretum that has been protected as a natural monument since 2011, with dozens of tree and shrub species from different parts of the world. It sits right inside the neighborhood and most visitors passing through never notice it.
