Monastère de Zaova

The monastery is an Orthodox sanctuary in Toponica with a church built from tuff stone. It features a single nave with a semicircular apse and blind arcades on the exterior walls, while a bell tower completes the religious complex.

The first written record appears in Ottoman documents from 1467. A bell tower was added during the 1930s to extend the original structure.

The frescoes and religious images were created by the artist Živko Pavlović in 1849. Some of these early artworks and the icon screen were later moved to the episcopal palace in Požarevac, where visitors can see parts of the original decoration today.

The monastery sits along the Požarevac-Petrovac na Mlavi road and welcomes visitors year-round. Access is convenient from this main route, and visitors can explore the rural setting and the proximity to Lake Zaova.

The site sits near Lake Zaova with walking paths connecting the religious sanctuary to the surrounding natural landscape. This blend of spiritual space and nature creates a distinctive experience for those exploring the grounds.
