Gus-Khrustalny is a city in the east of Vladimir Oblast that developed along the Gus River and is shaped by its long tradition of glassmaking. The place sits in a forested area surrounded by pine woods that once supplied fuel for the glass furnaces.
Industrialist Akim Maltsev founded the settlement in 1756 as a site for his glass manufactory, which grew quickly and drew workers from across the region. In the 19th century, the place developed into a major center of Russian crystal production.
The town takes its name from the Gus River and the Russian word for crystal, reflecting its centuries-old glass production. Many buildings in the center date from the industrial boom and show the typical architecture of a Russian factory town.
