Desnogorsk

Desnogorsk sits on the right bank of the Desna River in Smolensk Oblast, located roughly 200 meters above sea level. The town was built as a modern administrative center with standard infrastructure from its planning period.

The town was founded in 1974 as the nuclear power plant was being built in the area. This origin shaped everything about how it was planned and how it functions today.

Many residents here work in the local nuclear power plant, which shapes daily life and the community's sense of purpose. This industrial connection influences how people organize their time and interact with each other.

The town can be reached via Roslavl I railway station and the Russian federal highway A130, which runs from Moscow toward the Belarus border. These two connections are the main ways to access the area by land.

The town was built specifically for nuclear industry workers who were drawn here with special benefits during the Soviet era. Though this closed-city model no longer applies, the legacy of that purposeful planning remains noticeable today.
