Krasny Oktyabr Open Joint-Stock Company
Krasny Oktyabr Open Joint-Stock Company, Chocolate factory in Yakimanka District, Russia
Description
Krasny Oktyabr stretches along the Bersenevskaya embankment and displays red brick with industrial design elements from the 1890s. Several interconnected wings form an architectural complex where original factory elements like steel beams and large arched windows blend with new uses.
History
The Einem company founded the factory in 1889 and developed it into one of the largest confectionery producers in the Russian Empire. After the October Revolution, the plant was nationalized and received the name Krasny Oktyabr in 1922, under which it operated until production relocated in the early 2000s.
Culture
The former chocolate production site now serves as a center for contemporary art and creative industries, where designers and artists maintain their studios. Visitors experience the interplay of industrial architecture and modern gallery culture as they walk through the renovated halls with their high ceilings and large windows.
Practical
The complex can be entered through several entrances from the embankment that lead to different galleries, restaurants and creative spaces. Most areas are freely accessible, though individual exhibitions and events may have their own opening times.
Did you know?
The company's chocolate products won two Grand Prix awards at the Paris World Exhibition in 1900, raising international recognition. During the Soviet period, confectioners developed some recipes that are still produced under the same names today and evoke childhood memories among Russian buyers.
