Gorkovskaya, metro station
Gorkovskaya is a metro station in Nizhny Novgorod, built beneath Gorky Street with two exits opening toward the city center. It is a shallow column station with a single island platform divided into three bays by rows of slim columns, giving the hall an open and airy feel.
The station opened on November 5, 2012 as part of the fourth phase of the Avtozovodsko-Nagorny line. Work started in 2008 and required closing parts of Gorky Street at various stages to carry out the underground construction.
The station takes its name from the writer Maxim Gorky, who was born in the city and remains a strong local reference. Mosaic panels along the platform walls show views of Nizhny Novgorod as seen from the river, so passengers can recognize familiar places while waiting for the train.
The station has two exits on either side of Gorky Street, both served by escalators and elevators for step-free access between street level and the platform. Electronic displays on the platform show upcoming train arrivals, making it easy to plan your wait.
The ceiling of the platform was shaped to echo the silhouette of a seagull, a recurring image in Maxim Gorky's writing. This gives the hall a curved rhythm that sets it apart from the more angular design of older metro stations in Russia.
