Lesser Kurils Zakaznik

The Lesser Kurils Zakaznik spreads across several regions with three distinct management sectors. The terrain includes volcanic landscapes, mineralized lakes, and forest areas.

The reserve was established in 1982 as a nature conservation area to protect the ecosystems of the Kuril Islands. This founding was part of broader efforts to safeguard the fragile island environment.

This reserve protects habitats where rare birds and other wildlife live in their natural state today. The different zones here show how the Kuril Islands support varied ecosystems across coastlines and forests.

Access to the area requires special permits and is strictly limited, as the zone is reserved primarily for scientific research and environmental education. Visitors should expect that entry is only possible with prior authorization from the relevant authorities.

The area is home to rare species like Blakiston's fish owl, a large fish-hunting bird that nests in old forests. These remarkable birds are difficult to spot and represent the unspoiled nature of the island realm.
