Aleksandr Vampilov haykali, Bronze memorial statue at Karl Marx Street in Irkutsk, Russia
The Aleksandr Vampilov monument is a bronze statue in Irkutsk depicting the Soviet playwright in a casual, relaxed posture. It stands at the corner of Karl Marx Street and Chkalov Street, in the heart of the city's theater district.
Vampilov was a playwright who worked in the Soviet Union during the 1960s and drowned in Lake Baikal in 1972, just before his 35th birthday. The monument was erected after his death to mark his connection to Irkutsk, the city where he spent much of his life.
The statue stands close to the Academic Drama Theater, where Vampilov's plays are still performed today. People heading to or from the theater often stop in front of it for a moment before moving on.
The statue is at a central crossroads in the theater district and easy to reach on foot from the city center. It is outdoors and open at any time, so a short detour is all it takes to see it.
Unlike most monuments where the subject stands high on a pedestal, Vampilov appears at street level, as if walking alongside the people passing by. This makes the encounter feel more like meeting someone than visiting a memorial.
