Board of Trustees of the Moscow Orphanage, Cultural heritage complex in Tagansky District, Russia.
The Board of Trustees of the Moscow Orphanage is a building complex on Solyanka Street in the Tagansky District of Moscow, made up of four separate structures with neoclassical design elements. The buildings were designed by architects Afanasy Grigoriev and Domenico Gilardi and are now listed as a federal cultural heritage site in Russia.
The institution was founded in 1814 as an orphanage and grew through the 19th century into one of the most recognized centers for child welfare in Moscow. After the 1917 revolution, its function changed and the complex became a government institution.
The complex once housed its own theater stage where children could learn and perform in front of an audience. This made the site unusual among charitable institutions of the time, giving it a creative role beyond basic care.
The complex stands on Solyanka Street in the Tagansky District and is easy to spot from the pavement. Because it is a protected heritage site, access to the interiors may be limited, so it is worth checking in advance.
Domenico Gilardi, one of the two architects behind the complex, was a Swiss architect who worked in Moscow and played a key role in rebuilding the city after the fire of 1812. The orphanage buildings are part of a wider wave of construction that reshaped Moscow in the years following the war.
