Sakhalin Regional Museum, Regional museum in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, Russia.
The Sakhalin Regional Museum is housed in a building built in Imperial Crown Style, which blends Japanese and Western architectural features. The structure displays a mix of both styles that reflects the region's layered history.
The museum was founded in 1896 in Alexandrovsk and moved to its current location after Japanese occupation ended. It reopened in 1946 with assistance from Japanese staff members.
The museum displays the traditions of indigenous peoples including the Ainu, Nivkh, and Uilta through objects and old photographs. Visitors can see how these communities lived and what crafts and skills they practiced.
The museum is open Tuesday to Friday and Sunday from 10:00 to 18:00, with extended hours on Saturdays until 20:00. Plan to spend a few hours to see the different exhibition areas at a comfortable pace.
The collection includes one of four boundary markers placed along the 50th parallel in 1906 to mark territorial divisions following the Russo-Japanese War. This rare artifact shows the physical results of the major territorial shifts on the island.
