The construction of the cathedral started in 1998 after Metropolitan Nikolai of Nizhny Novgorod blessed the initial plans on August 12, 1994.

The cathedral's design incorporates elements from Romanesque, Byzantine, and ancient Russian architectural traditions, representing multiple Orthodox artistic influences.
