Георгий

Georgy is an early fortified settlement located on elevated terrain near river confluences in Novgorod Oblast. The site features deep defensive ditches and high earthen ramparts arranged in an irregular oval pattern with multiple defense lines.

The settlement began in the early Iron Age and served as a crucial defensive position for over a thousand years in the region. Archaeological layers show it was repeatedly reinforced and rebuilt during various periods of antiquity and the medieval era.

The site reveals how early settlers adapted their defensive structures to the landscape and controlled river crossings. The arrangement of earthen walls and ditches shows practical knowledge of defense that was passed down through generations.

The site is an open archaeological area that can be visited anytime, but it remains undeveloped and requires good terrain navigation skills. Waterproof shoes and weather-appropriate clothing are advisable since the ground can be marshy and exposed.

Some of the earthen ramparts show traces of wooden palisades that were driven into the ground, revealing how wood and earth were combined. This mixed construction was more economical than solid stone walls and suited the forest resources available in the region.
