New Krigskomissariat, Moscow, Military warehouse in Zamoskvorechye District, Moscow, Russia
The New Krigskomissariat sits on Kosmodamianskaya Embankment and features a symmetrical front built with neoclassical design principles. Inside, the structure holds storage areas and office spaces arranged across multiple levels to support military operations and administrative work.
Architect Nicholas Legrand designed this building in 1780 during a period when Russia was modernizing its military management systems. From 1933 onward, it served as headquarters for the Moscow Military District, keeping this role for many decades.
The building shows how Russia combined military storage and administrative work in one structure during the 1700s. The balanced facade design reflected the way authorities wanted to present strength and organization to the city.
The building sits near Sadovnicheskaya Street and Komissariatsky Lane, making it easy to find. Being located on the embankment side of the river helps with getting your bearings in the area.
The building kept its original warehouse layout intact even though it worked as a military office for decades. This makes it rare because the old construction and newer use coexisted without major changes to the interior.
