The Church of the Ascension is an Orthodox temple with five domes and the largest manorial temple of the 19th century in Pskov Region. The building features a well-balanced design with classical proportions that still defines the village's appearance.
Colonel Artamon Ozhipovich Kozhin initiated and funded the construction of this religious building in 1796 on his estate in Belskoye-Ustye. The creation of this temple was a major undertaking by the local nobility of that period.
The church was dedicated to the Ascension of the Lord, Saint Peter, and the Birth of the Virgin Mary, with each altar serving a different spiritual purpose for worshippers. These three dedications show what mattered most to the faith community of that time.
The temple served the local community until the 1960s when it was closed after the land transferred to a boarding school. When visiting, keep in mind that the building is now part of a school facility and may only be viewable from outside.
The architecture blends early neoclassical elements with baroque influences, showing the Saint Petersburg architectural style of the 18th century. This style mixture was common for large private churches built by Russian nobility of that era.
