Preußisch Eylau Castle

Preußisch Eylau is a stone fortress in Bagrationovsk located at a strategic position near water bodies, featuring defensive walls and elements of Teutonic military construction. The structure contains characteristic fortification features typical of castles from that period.

The fortress was founded in 1325 under Grand Master Werner von Orseln, with construction overseen by Dietrich von Altenburg as commander of the region. Over the centuries it experienced various sieges and played an important role in regional conflicts.

The fortress displays medieval German military design introduced by the Teutonic Knights who built and controlled the region. Visitors can still observe the heavy stone walls that reflect the order's power and influence.

The building requires restoration work, particularly on damaged roof sections and interior spaces. Visitors should be cautious and aware of potential structural issues that may affect access.

The fortress served as an administrative center during the Thirteen Years' War and withstood multiple sieges. Particularly noteworthy were attacks by Polish mercenaries in the early 1500s, which demonstrated the resilience of its construction.
