Dulo Tower of Simonov Monastery, Tower in Danilovsky District, Russia.
The Dulo Tower is a stone structure standing within the ancient walls of Simonov Monastery, built with traditional Russian design methods from the 17th century. Its thick walls and small openings reflect the practical construction style needed for defensive purposes at that time.
The tower was built in 1642 as part of Moscow's southern defense line protecting the city from threats. While much of the monastery was removed during the Soviet period, this structure survived intact through those decades of change.
This tower formed part of the monastery complex where monks lived and worked for centuries. Visitors can see how it relates to the other buildings and the daily life that took place there.
The tower is located in the Danilovsky District and is most easily reached by metro to Avtozavodskaya station. The monastery grounds are a short walk from the station and sit in a quiet residential area of the city.
The tower survived while the surrounding monastery was nearly demolished in the 1920s to make space for an automobile factory. Its preservation makes it one of the few original structures that escaped that period of destruction.
