Marientahl Pond, بركة في روسيا
Marientahl Pond is an artificial lake in Pavlovsk park that extends from the Slavyanka River and is held back by a tall stone dam. It connects to a second body of water to the north and is surrounded by walking paths, staircases, and various park structures.
Construction began in 1790 under orders from Tsar Paul I, with architect Vincenzo Brenna building a new dam to hold water and enhance the park. It became part of a larger estate landscape designed to resemble scenic mountain villages of the period.
The pond is named after Maria Feodorovna, wife of Tsar Paul I, who cherished this location as a place for leisure. Boat outings and social gatherings once took place here, making it a focal point for recreation and celebration among nobility and guests.
The grounds are easily explored on foot along wide paths circling the water, with staircases like the Trellage Staircase leading down to the shore. The terrain varies from flat to gently rolling, making it comfortable for visitors to walk at their own pace.
In the early 1800s, a boathouse called the Admiralty stood on the slope of the right bank, storing dozens of rowing boats for visitors. Though the building no longer stands, the location still echoes its past as a hub of water recreation.
