Nikolai M. Knipovich Polar Research Institute of Marine Fisheries and Oceanography

The institute conducts extensive research on marine fisheries and oceanic studies across the Barents Sea, Kara Sea, White Sea, and Norwegian Sea regions.

Established in 1921 as the Floating Marine Research Institute, the facility changed its name to honor scientist Nikolai Knipovich in 1935.

The institute maintains records of traditional fishing practices and marine resource management methods from northern Russian communities.

Scientists at the institute determine annual catch limits for commercial marine species including cod, haddock, capelin, herring, and Greenland halibut.

During World War II, the institute relocated to Arkhangelsk after losing its primary research vessel Perseus, which had completed nearly 100 expeditions.
