Migulin Caves consist of two separate chalk caverns called Old and New caves, carved into the right bank of the Don River. The New Cave extends roughly 200 meters with interconnected tunnels that form a maze-like layout while maintaining a constant cool temperature year-round.
The cave system originated roughly 600 years ago when monks first inhabited the Old Cave and later excavated the New Cave during medieval times. This expansion demonstrates how the monastic community grew and needed more space.
Religious symbols and prayer inscriptions are carved directly into the chalk walls by monks who once lived here. These markings show how the space was spiritually important to the people who used it as a place of worship.
Visitors should prepare for narrow, winding passages and bring a flashlight for safe navigation through the underground layout. Warm clothing and sturdy shoes are essential since temperatures stay cold throughout the year.
An underground water well hidden deep within the cave contains water tinted white from limestone deposits and was a vital resource for monks. The numerous monastic cells connected by vaulted corridors create a surprising miniature underground settlement.
