Smirnovsky Pond, Arzamas, بركة في روسيا
Smirnovsky Pond is an artificial body of water in the town of Arzamas covering just over a hectare with shoreline stretching about 500 meters. Willow trees grow along the banks, while birch and pine stand further back. The pond has reed beds, water plants like water buttercup, and fish species including carp and roach swimming beneath the surface.
The pond was dug out in the late 1880s and later named after merchant Smirnov who helped fund its construction and paved the banks. In the 1920s a dam and water outlet were built, and pipes carried water to the Arzamas railway station to supply steam locomotives.
The pond takes its name from a merchant called Smirnov who helped fund its creation and improvements in the late 1800s. Local residents visit regularly to walk along the paths, observe birds and wildlife, and enjoy quiet moments by the water.
The pond is easy to reach with walking paths circling the shoreline. The water is not suitable for swimming due to past pollution, but the banks have benches for sitting and watching the wildlife and reflections in the water.
The pond once supplied water to steam locomotives through a piping system connected to the railway station, showing how vital this water body was to rail operations. Crayfish were once abundant here but have disappeared since the 1990s, leaving only fish species like perch and roach.
