Korpowo German war cemetery, War cemetery in Korpowo, Russia
The Korpowo German war cemetery is a memorial site in the Russian village of Korpovo, located southeast of Staraya Russa along the road toward Demyansk. The grounds cover about 4 hectares (10 acres) and are laid out with granite steles and burial areas spread across a flat, open terrain.
The cemetery was established to gather the remains of soldiers who died in the Demyansk region during World War II, an area that saw particularly heavy fighting between 1942 and 1943. The burials reflect the scale of losses on this part of the Eastern Front.
The cemetery was created and is maintained by the Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge, a German organization that cares for the graves of soldiers buried abroad. Visitors can read names engraved on granite steles placed across the grounds.
The site sits directly on the road between Demyansk and Staraya Russa and is easy to spot from the roadside. The ground is uneven and there is no shelter on site, so sturdy footwear and weather-appropriate clothing are a good idea.
Among those buried here are Hans-Albrecht Lohr, a German actor, and Adolf Urban, a professional footballer who played for Hamburger SV. Their presence as two very different public figures reminds visitors that the war reached people from every background.
