Museum of Landscape Painting, Plyos

The Museum of Landscape Painting in Plyos houses an extensive collection of Russian landscape artworks that showcase the natural beauty of the Volga River region and surrounding countryside through masterful brushwork and color compositions.

Established in 1972 in the former residence of merchant Andrei Solodovnikov, this museum was created to honor Isaac Levitan, the renowned Russian landscape painter who lived and worked in this very building during his artistic visits to Plyos in the late 19th century.

The museum serves as a regional cultural heritage site that preserves the artistic legacy of Russian landscape painting, featuring works by Levitan and his contemporaries including Vasily Polenov, Sergei Vinogradov, and Sofia Kuvshinnikova who helped define the national landscape art movement.

Located at 20 Lunacharsky Street, the museum operates with guided tours, educational programs, and temporary exhibitions, welcoming nearly four million visitors who can explore memorial rooms containing Levitan's personal belongings including his palette and painting tools.

Annual celebrations on August 30th commemorate Levitan's birthday with community gatherings featuring poetry recitations, music performances, and visitors bringing homemade gifts like apples and pies, creating a festive atmosphere that blends art appreciation with local traditions.
