St. Barbara Church, Plyos

The white stone church stands on a hillside with views of the Volga River, featuring traditional Russian Orthodox architectural elements and decorative details.

Constructed in 1821 during a period of religious expansion in Russia, the church underwent restoration work in the 1980s to maintain its original structural integrity.

The church gained recognition when painter Isaac Levitan included it in his 1889 work Evening: Golden Plyos, now displayed at the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow.

Visitors can reach the church by following Varvarinskaya Street uphill, with opportunities to combine the visit with nearby Levitan House Museum and Resurrection Hill.

The church maintains its role as an active religious center while holding status as a federal cultural heritage site, preserving both spiritual and historical functions.
