Плакун

Plakun is an archaeological site on the right bank of the Volkhov River in the Leningrad region, containing ancient burial mounds and settlement remains. The location consists of several mounds of varying sizes and shows traces of human habitation across different periods.

Archaeological excavations revealed burials from the period between 850 and 950 that contained artifacts indicating connections between Slavic and Scandinavian populations. The findings suggest this area was a significant center for contact and exchange between different cultural groups.

The burials here show specific funeral customs where horses with bridles were placed alongside the dead and graves were arranged in a north-south direction. These practices reveal how people of that time honored their deceased and prepared them for the afterlife.

The site is regularly monitored and maintained by archaeologists and researchers and welcomes visitors interested in ancient history. Before arriving, it is wise to check whether guided tours are available or if self-guided exploration is possible.

The eleventh mound at this site is special because it contains the only inhumation burial among all the mounds. This grave offers detailed information about social structures and possibly the status of the people who lived here.
