Staraya Ladoga Fortress, Medieval fortress in Staraya Ladoga, Russia
Staraya Ladoga Fortress is a stone fortification located on raised ground at the point where the Volkhov and Ladozhka rivers meet. It contains five defense towers and thick walls that enclose a large defended area.
The fortress began in the 8th century when Varangian prince Rurik established a settlement here, marking the start of Russian statehood. This early founding made the place a central point in medieval European history.
The Church of St. George inside holds rare frescoes from the 12th century showing religious scenes and the saint defeating a dragon. These artworks reveal how people of that era understood their faith and sacred stories.
The site is easy to explore on foot and offers good views from the towers across the surrounding rivers and valley. Inside, two museums display archaeological finds and historical objects from different periods.
The place served as a crucial defense point on the ancient trade route from Scandinavia to Constantinople, called the way from Varangians to Greeks. This route connected early Russia directly to the wider European trading network.
