St. George's Church, Staraya Ladoga

The white stone Orthodox church stands within the Staraya Ladoga Fortress complex, featuring a single dome and three high apses on its eastern facade.

Construction of St. George's Church occurred between 1180 and 1200, making it one of the oldest surviving religious buildings in northern Russia.

The church walls contain fragments of 12th-century frescoes created by Byzantine artists, including a large vertical composition depicting St. George and the Dragon.

Visitors can access the church's upper gallery through an internal staircase in the western wall, which leads to enclosed corner chambers connected by wooden flooring.

The church design modified traditional architectural plans by relocating a lower window to preserve an important fresco, demonstrating adaptation of structure for artistic purposes.
