Преображенский рынок, Food market in Preobrazhensky Val Street, Russia
Preobrazhensky Market is a food marketplace in the Preobrazhenskoye district of Moscow, close to the metro station of the same name. It has both covered and open-air sections with stalls selling fresh produce, meat, dairy, baked goods, and household items.
The market opened in 1932 on land that had belonged to the Preobrazhensky Monastery, whose buildings were abandoned after the Russian Revolution. The monastery itself had been founded in the early 18th century by Tsar Peter I.
The stalls carry goods from many parts of Russia and neighboring countries, from dried herbs to pickled vegetables and homemade preserves. Some vendors have been selling here for years and greet their regulars by name.
The market sits right next to Preobrazhenskaya Ploshchad metro station and is easy to reach on foot from there. Most stalls are best stocked in the morning before midday, so an early visit gives the widest choice.
The market stands in one of Moscow's oldest districts, which for centuries lay outside the city limits and was considered a separate settlement. The name of the surrounding area still comes from the monastery that once shaped life here.
