Church of Saint Nicholas in Preobrazhenskoye Cemetery

The Church of Saint Nicholas features tall windows, detailed stonework, and pointed arches characteristic of Russian pseudo-gothic design, standing within a historical cemetery complex. Its interior is divided into separate sections that serve different religious communities.

The building was constructed in 1801 and later became part of Saint Nicholas Monastery after the imperial administration took control of the male section of the monastery complex. Following the October Revolution, its use and management underwent significant changes.

The temple serves multiple religious communities today, with different sections shared between Pomortsy Old Believers and the Russian Orthodox Church. This arrangement shows how the building brings together different branches of Orthodox faith.

The church can be reached through public transportation routes via Преображенский Вал street connecting to central Moscow. The cemetery is large, so plan enough time to explore the grounds and see the various monuments scattered throughout.

The cemetery grounds hold Moscow's first Eternal Flame monument, which honors World War II casualties and stands as a solemn memorial. This monument makes the site significant as a place of remembrance beyond its religious role.
