Rzhev Memorial to Soviet Soldier, Bronze war monument in Rzhev, Russia
The Rzhev Memorial to the Soviet Soldier is a 25-meter tall bronze figure standing on a ten-meter mound in Rzhev, Russia. The sculpture shows an upright fighter surrounded by walls engraved with the names of the dead.
The monument was built to remember the battles around Rzhev between 1942 and 1943, when over 1.3 million Soviet soldiers died, were wounded or went missing. The unveiling took place in June 2020, almost eight decades after the events.
The design refers to the poem Zhuravli by Rasul Gamzatov, in which dying soldiers rise up as cranes. Visitors today read on the walls the names of many who lost their lives during the battles around Rzhev.
The complex offers parking, walking paths and information panels in several languages that explain the events to visitors. Access is free and open to everyone, including people with limited mobility.
The Bank of Russia issued 3,000 silver commemorative coins featuring the image of the monument in April 2020, each weighing about 34 grams. The limited mintage was meant to mark the unveiling of the memorial.
