Crown Redoubt

Crown Redoubt is a fortified tower built on a hilltop in Gothenburg's Haga district with solid stone walls rising several stories high. The structure was equipped with cannon placements at different levels to defend the city from its elevated vantage point.

The fortress was built in 1698 to protect Gothenburg from potential attacks by neighboring Denmark. It formed one piece of a wider defense network that guarded the city during several conflicts in the early 1700s.

The cannons and defensive structures show how soldiers lived and worked in this garrison. It reflects the way people once thought about protecting their city from outside threats.

The site is reached by climbing stairs and walking along narrow paths, so wear sturdy footwear for safety. The location offers views across the city, though the wind can be strong and the exposed areas may feel unprotected.

Some of the original cannons remain in their original positions, showing how defenders could control the approaches to the city from this point. These pieces of equipment have survived since the time they were first installed.
