Frilagerhuset, Historical warehouse in Masthugget district, Gothenburg, Sweden
Frilagerhuset is a warehouse building in the Masthugget district of Gothenburg with five floors above ground and one basement level below. The rectangular structure with its solid industrial appearance houses today a mix of businesses and cultural organizations in its interior spaces.
Construction took place between 1917 and 1920, making it Sweden's first free warehouse when it opened. The structure lost its original purpose after the establishment of Frihamnen port in 1922 and transitioned to different uses over time.
The building now hosts publishing companies, architecture offices, and the Göteborgs Litteraturhus, where literary events take place regularly. These cultural tenants have transformed it into a gathering place for creative professionals and literature enthusiasts.
The building is located near Järntorget and Esperantoplatsen, making it accessible by public transport and easy to find in the district. As an active workspace and cultural venue, visiting hours depend on specific events or exhibitions happening inside.
The building earned the nickname 'Ostlagret', meaning Cheese Warehouse, because it stored dairy products for many years. This use defined the building's character until 1964 and remains a notable detail in the district's local story.
