Merkurhuset, Contemporary office building in central Gothenburg, Sweden.
Merkurhuset is a contemporary office building located in central Gothenburg that covers approximately 8,000 square meters. It features distinctive masonry cylinders made from Danish Flensburg brick and expansive glass panels running across multiple floors.
The original Merkurhuset was designed in 1897 by architect Ernst Krüger and influenced the design of this newer structure. The building sits on land where a historic moat once ran, creating a direct link between past and present development.
The building was designed in collaboration with advertising agency Forsman & Bodenfors and shows careful thought in its interior design. Geometric wooden structures and beechwood furniture create a considered workspace that reflects contemporary work culture.
The stairwells and elevator shafts are positioned at both ends of the building, creating large unobstructed open office spaces inside. This layout provides flexibility for workspace arrangement and makes the building easy to navigate.
Intermediate pillars rise through the glass facades in an unusual way, a result of strict height restrictions in the area. The angled outer wall on the top floor cleverly responds to these spatial constraints.
