Sara Kulturhus, Cultural center in Skellefteå, Sweden.
Sara Kulturhus is a wooden building in Skellefteå that rises approximately 75 meters across 20 floors, making it one of the world's tallest timber constructions. Inside are six performance stages, exhibition spaces, a hotel with 205 rooms, and seating for around 1200 visitors across various halls.
The building opened in September 2021 and became a landmark in sustainable architecture for its scale. It ranks among the world's tallest mass-timber structures, demonstrating new possibilities for environmentally conscious construction.
The center is named after writer Sara Lidman and brings together several cultural venues in one building. The Västerbotten Regional Theatre, art gallery, museum, and city library all share this space, making it a gathering place where locals and visitors experience performances, exhibitions, and cultural programs.
The complex is readily accessible and offers charging stations for electric vehicles throughout the building. The various venues inside are well-connected, making it easy to visit theaters, galleries, and exhibitions in a single visit.
The building uses water from the nearby Skellefteå River to regulate heating and cooling systems, a clever way to maintain comfort year-round. Solar panels and geothermal heat pumps further reduce energy consumption, making it a genuinely efficient structure.
