Springkällan, Artesian spring in Rättvik Municipality, Sweden
Springkällan is an underground spring in the Siljan Ring impact crater area where clear water continuously rises from deep below the ground. The water forms a steady flow that fills the space around a deep opening.
In 1869, workers drilling for oil accidentally struck an underground water reservoir that had never been tapped before. This chance discovery created the spring that continues to flow continuously to this day.
The spring has become a place where people gather to experience flowing water and natural surroundings across all seasons. It transformed from an abandoned drilling site into a destination that draws regular visitors.
The site is accessible via an unpaved road with parking nearby for visitor convenience. A wind shelter and picnic table are available on-site, making it comfortable to stop and observe the water flow in any weather.
During winter, the continuously flowing water creates substantial ice formations around the opening, transforming the appearance completely. These crystalline structures form because the warm water keeps emerging from below even when temperatures drop well below freezing.
