Singapore Changi Airport, International airport in Changi, Singapore
Singapore Changi Airport is an international airport in Changi, Singapore, featuring three passenger terminals and covering an area of thirteen square kilometers. The facility stretches along the eastern coast of the island and connects the terminals through automated train systems and pedestrian walkways.
The airport opened in 1981 by the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore and replaced the old Paya Lebar Airport. Over the following decades, the government expanded the facility gradually with new terminals and runways to accommodate growing air traffic.
The name Changi comes from an old Malay word for a tropical tree species that once grew in the area. Visitors encounter this connection to nature today through planted zones and open greenery halls that sit between the gates.
For short connection times, it helps to stay within the same terminal, as traveling between buildings can take up to thirty minutes. Arrival and departure halls sit on different levels, with signage in four languages guiding the way to the gates.
A free cinema program runs around the clock in several halls scattered between the departure areas. Travelers can watch films without leaving the terminal or paying admission.
