Rain Vortex, Artificial waterfall in Changi, Singapore
The Rain Vortex is an artificial waterfall inside Jewel Changi Airport that drops 40 meters through seven stories from a circular opening in the glass dome ceiling. The falling water creates a sculptural centerpiece visible from multiple levels of the airport.
The waterfall was designed by architect Moshe Safdie and opened in 2019 as part of the new Jewel terminal expansion. Safdie envisioned this sculptural installation to welcome travelers arriving and departing from the airport.
The waterfall represents how Singapore brings nature into built environments, offering travelers a moment of connection with water in the middle of the airport.
The waterfall is visible all day, but evenings offer light and sound shows that enhance the experience. Access is free and easy to reach from anywhere in the terminal.
The installation collects rainwater from the glass dome and recycles it through the system, allowing water to be reused continuously. This closed-loop approach makes it both sustainable and self-sustaining.
