Sri Mariamman Temple, Singapore, Hindu temple in Chinatown, Singapore.

Sri Mariamman Temple is a Hindu sanctuary in Chinatown with a six-tiered entrance tower whose walls are covered with colorful sculptures of gods and mythological figures. The building showcases South Indian Dravidian architecture with intricate carvings and traditional design throughout.

Naraina Pillai founded this site in 1827 as Singapore's first Hindu temple, creating a central place for the growing Indian community. The temple was later expanded and modernized while retaining its original religious purpose and importance.

The temple serves as a gathering place where the Tamil Hindu community celebrates marriages and religious ceremonies that connect people to their heritage. Visitors can observe devotees making offerings and participating in rituals that have continued for generations.

The sanctuary is open daily to visitors, with set prayer times in the morning and evening that allow for quiet and focus. Visitors should remove shoes before entering and wear modest clothing to respect the sacred space.

The annual Theemithi Festival takes place here, where devotees walk barefoot across glowing charcoal to demonstrate their humility and faith. This spectacular ritual draws thousands of visitors each year who come to witness the powerful event.
