Singapore Police Force, Law enforcement agency in Singapore
The Singapore Police Force is a government agency in Singapore responsible for public safety and operates through several specialized divisions. Headquarters are located at New Phoenix Park and coordinate operations across the city and surrounding islands.
Francis James Bernard founded the force in 1820 with just eleven officers to patrol the growing port settlement. Over the decades, the organization evolved with new divisions and technology to meet the needs of a changing society.
The Police Heritage Centre at New Phoenix Park displays exhibits and artifacts that document the evolution of law enforcement practices in Singapore.
Police stations are scattered throughout the island and access to the central emergency number operates around the clock from any phone. The Heritage Centre at headquarters can be visited during regular office hours and offers information on local law enforcement history.
The Gurkha Contingent consists of Nepalese soldiers who have been part of the organization since 1949 and form a separate unit. The Police Coast Guard also patrols along the coastline and between the smaller islands using specialized boats.
