Silpakorn University, Arts university at Tha Phra Palace, Bangkok, Thailand.
Silpakorn University is a higher education institution in Bangkok, Thailand, that focuses on art, architecture, and archaeology across three campuses. The main site sits inside the former Tha Phra Palace on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River, while the other two locations in Nakhon Pathom and Phetchaburi house studios, libraries, and workshops.
The Italian professor Corrado Feroci, who later became a Thai citizen known as Silpa Bhirasri, founded the institution in 1943 building on his School of Fine Arts from 1933. Moving into Tha Phra Palace linked the young institution to a historic royal building and gave it space to grow and gain recognition.
The Faculty of Painting and Sculpture has shaped the Thai art scene for decades, and many graduates now create works for national exhibitions and public spaces. Walking around campus, you often see students painting, sketching, or working on sculptures, showing how close the place stays to hands-on creative practice.
The main riverside campus is easy to reach by water taxi and public buses, and buildings are usually open during the day for visitors when exams are not taking place. Anyone wanting to see exhibition spaces or studios should check with the university in advance to find out when public events or shows are scheduled.
Founder Corrado Feroci designed several important monuments in Bangkok, including the Democracy Monument, before he started the university. The Sanam Chandra campus uses pavilions and grounds originally laid out by King Rama VI as a summer retreat.
