The district covers 406 square kilometers of northeastern Thailand, containing 12 sub-districts and 148 villages along the banks of the Mun River.
The district changed names from Buphupalanikhom to Burapha Ubon in 1909, before receiving its current designation as Mueang Ubon Ratchathani in 1913.
The district stands as the central region of Ubon Ratchathani province, where Buddhist temples and educational institutions shape the daily life of 211,855 residents.
The area experiences three distinct climate periods: dry winters from November to January, rising temperatures from February to April, and monsoon rains from May to October.
The district shares borders with seven other districts, including Kanthararom from Sisaket province, forming a crucial administrative hub in the Isan region.
