Siriraj Piyamaharajkarun Hospital, hospital in Bangkok, Thailand
Siriraj Piyamaharajkarun Hospital is a public hospital in Bangkok on the west side of the Chao Phraya River with over 2,000 beds serving various patient needs. The building spreads across multiple floors, each housing specialized clinics for eye care, pediatrics, cardiology, and cancer treatment.
The hospital was founded in 1888 by King Chulalongkorn and was the first in Thailand to provide modern medical services to the public. Since then it grew steadily and became the oldest and largest public hospital in the country, working closely with Mahidol University.
The hospital bears the name of a late king and symbolizes his medical legacy for the people. Inside, the spaces feel thoughtfully organized, and staff visibly work to treat patients with respect and patience.
The hospital is located near river boat routes and major roads, making it easy to reach from different parts of Bangkok. Visitors should expect it to be busiest in the mornings and during flu season, though staff work quickly to keep waiting times short.
The hospital pioneered medical breakthroughs: in 2019 it installed the first MRI-linear accelerator combination in Southeast Asia, and in 2018 it performed the first combined heart, liver, and kidney transplant in Asia. It also operates a center for over 40 inherited metabolic diseases, found nowhere else in Thailand.
