Chulachomklao Fort, Military fort in Laem Fa Pha, Thailand
Chulachomklao Fort is a military installation near Laem Fa Pha that includes barracks, fortification walls, and military equipment along the Gulf of Thailand. The compound sits on flat ground facing the river mouth and contains several freestanding brick and stone structures.
King Chulalongkorn commissioned this installation in 1893 to defend against seaborne attacks. The construction aimed to secure the approach to the Chao Phraya and protect the capital from foreign warships.
The architectural design merges Thai military traditions with European defense systems, displaying the technological exchanges between Thailand and Western nations.
Access is by road south of Bangkok, and a taxi or private car takes roughly an hour depending on traffic. Guided tours run during opening hours and provide background on the military use of the site.
The original Armstrong guns from the 19th century remain in their first positions, aimed toward the river mouth. These artillery pieces were among the most advanced weapon systems at the time and were shipped from England.
