Asiatique The Riverfront Destination, Riverside shopping center in Wat Phraya Krai, Thailand.
Asiatique The Riverfront is a shopping center on the banks of the Chao Phraya in Bangkok, housed in former trade halls. The complex consists of ten long buildings connected by pedestrian walkways that run parallel to the river.
The warehouses once served the Danish East Asiatic Company for importing goods from Europe and Asia. After decades of disuse, the buildings were restored and reopened as an open-air shopping district.
Many shops in the old warehouses sell handmade jewelry and clothing by Thai designers who keep their workshops on-site. Visitors can watch artisans at work and often speak with them about their creations.
Access is mainly via ferries departing from several piers in Bangkok. The alleys can get crowded on weekends, so a weekday visit offers a calmer experience.
A Ferris wheel at the southern end offers views over the river and surrounding city. The ride lasts about 15 minutes and each cabin is air-conditioned, which is comfortable on hot evenings.
