Büyük Yeni Han, Historic caravanserai in Grand Bazaar district, Turkey
Büyük Yeni Han is a three-story stone building in the Istanbul bazaar district featuring a rectangular courtyard at its center. Arched galleries surround this courtyard, providing access to numerous merchant rooms used by shopkeepers and businesses.
Sultan Mustafa III commissioned this caravanserai in 1761, and its completion in 1764 marked a significant resumption of royal support for such trading structures in Istanbul. The building reflected the sultanate's commitment to maintaining commercial infrastructure during the mid-18th century.
The building served as a major meeting place for merchants and money changers from across the Ottoman world. Today the layout and spaces still reflect this trading heritage, even though the types of business conducted have changed significantly.
The building remains in active use today, housing shops and offices accessible through the main entrance located near the Grand Bazaar area. Visitors can walk through the courtyard and explore the galleries on multiple levels to appreciate the layout and architecture.
A lesser-known detail is that between 1770 and 1789 this caravanserai generated about five percent of the revenue for the Laleli Mosque complex's endowment fund. This financial connection reveals how closely commercial buildings were tied to religious institutions across the Ottoman realm.
