Stepanivka is an urban-type settlement located in Sumy Oblast on the left bank of the Sumka river, a tributary of the Psel. The settlement sits within the broader Dnieper River basin, which shapes the region's hydrology and landscape.
The settlement was founded in 1670 and initially functioned as part of Stepansky Volost before establishing its present administrative structure. In January 2024, it underwent a major reclassification from urban-type settlement to rural settlement.
The settlement contains archaeological evidence of the Cucuteni-Trypillian culture, which occupied a 15-hectare area between 5000 and 4300 BCE.
