The memorial was unveiled in 1973 at the site of a former concentration camp in the city. It honors the liberation of the area and commemorates those who suffered captivity there.
The main statue shows a prisoner doctor supporting an exhausted companion, capturing how people in captivity helped one another survive. This scene reflects bonds of human solidarity that formed in the darkest circumstances.
